Is balsamic vinegar OK to use in a chuck steak marinade? Most of the steak marinade recipes I've seen call for red wine. I don't want to buy a bottle of wine just because I need a few tablespoons for a meat marinade. I do have balsamic vinegar, but was wondering if it would bee too sharp to use. koolkeith19 replied: "yes, for sure!
if you like your sauce a little sweet reduce the balsamic until syrupy... mmmm"
ktrb replied: "I think it'd be fine -- add a pinch or two of sugar if you want to cut the acidity."
Bekki replied: "The taste will be a bit different, but it will work fine. You could use grape juice, too, instead of the wine."
mickyxx3 replied: "when i help cooked food for my parent's party....i used a balsamic vinegar reduce and it gave the steak a tang crisp to it IT WAS AWSOME!"
audioworld replied: "yes you can use it.
If it seem bitter to your taste (I do not think it does, but some do) add a spoon of sugar"
jimmy d. replied: "Balsamic is a darker, actually sweeter vinagar. You might add a squeeze of lemon juice to it to balance the taste in the marinade...go for it!"
Barbara A replied: "Hello.
I'm italian and I live in Milan. I am addicted to Aceto Balsamico insofar that I even use it on strawberries.
A tip for your steak? Make a marinade of balsamic vinegar, one spoon of mustard and lemon juice. Add salt and pepper.
It will be great, but don't abuse the aceto balsamico...3 kitchen spoons max."
James S replied: "If it is a little too sharp, then use a red wine vinegar. It's in a relativelt small bottle, but still lighter than balsamic. I suggest no to balsamic vinegar seeing as it tends to be really sharp. Red wine vinegar is a lighter version, in the basics, and gives a nice flavor to the marinaded steak.
If you do use it, add a little dijon or brown mustard, about a tsp. of lemon juice. But not sugar, sugar doesn't help all that much. But a tip from another person, always go for the red wine vinegar if called for. But if you need to, or if it is the only thing on hand, no problems."
jo p replied: "Balsamic vinegar is a tenderizer. Delute it with a little water & add your spices, a little brown sugar & mustard"
Cyndi M replied: "should be fine...."
chef spicey replied: "YES it is a wonderful marinade for almost anything!" What kind of balsamic vinegar do you use when mixing with strawberries? I have a recipe for strawberries mixed with a wee bit of sugar and a couple tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Do you use the same type as you would for salads? Any brand recommendations? Thanks for the help. Lana replied: "You need an AGED Balsamic Vinegar; the more expensive the more aged.
Buy a middle of the road balsamic vinegar and do this:
Put 1 cup in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Add in 1 T brown sugar and stir. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer for about 20 mins, stirring often. Until it becomes syruppy.
Then, CHILL it for about an hour, or until cold in the freezer.
Use that."
ALT16 replied: "I like to use white balsamic vinegar."
Sugar Pie replied: "yep, same type as for salads. I've not found the expensive ones worth the price asked, compared to widely-available brands."
Chef Tony replied: "If cost is no issue, I would buy some aged for at least 20-30 years. If not just buy an $8 bottle and reduce until slightly thicker. I like to macerate the berries in the sugar for a while then drizzle the cooled vinegar on last. Try a pinch of allspice and a chiffonade of some fresh basil for a savory twist." What's the difference between white and balsamic vinegar? so my first time cooking and iim tryiing to make thiis:
"brown 6 table spoons butter in a pan. turn off heat, allow to cool for a bit and add 2 tablespoons BALSAMIC VINEGAR. make sure it is off heat! toss pasta in mixture, salt and pepper to taste and top with grated cheese....enjoy."
MY PROBLEM:
I only have white distilled vinegar and I need the balsamic would it affect the tase of the recipe? maxin_96 replied: "Oh yes, there's a HUGE difference between the two. The balsamic vinegar will sweeten as it cooks where the white will add a very sour taste to the dish.
You don't want to add the white where the recipe calls for Balsamic. Not even Red wine vinegar can subsitute for Balsamic, it gets very syrupy when cooked and very sweet.
You could just skip adding it altogether if you already started making the dish. It won't be horrible not to add it. If you add the white, it will be worse than adding nothing at all."
Michelle replied: "There is A HUGE difference between the two. Do not substiture white vinegar for balsamic, totally different textures and tastes."
Patrick R replied: "Yes, it will affect the taste.
Balsamic is heavy, fruity, and sweet.
If you must your white vinegar, cut back the amount, and stir in a slight amount of strawberry or other berry jam. (1-2 teaspoons)"
Suz225 replied: "Yes it will, white vinegar is very acidic...and balsamic vinegar is aged mellow and a bit on the sweet side. Do you have any red wine in the house? or even a white wine? if you do, then add @ a 1/2 teas. of your vinegar to the wine...it will turn the wine and you can use that in your recipe."
Mike L replied: "Night and day
One is brewed for years"
goodgreif40 replied: "I have posted some very informational sites that explain the different vinegars and will help you decide if you want to use it instead of what the recipe calls for. It will be ok, just taste a lil different. I think it would be better than white in the recipe you posted."
Yerba74, Free Hugs replied: "Just add one table spoon of soy sauce and one tablespoon of white vinegar...That will do it just right. Believe me I've done it before ;)"
Robert S replied: "Yes, Balsamic contains pine gum & is aged, slightly sweet.
A wine vinegar would be a better substitute than white." my aged balsamic vinegar is very sweet and has lots of sugar in it!? is this normal? I've seen balsamic vinegar with no sugar in the nutritional info, but this aged balsamic has sugar in the nutritional info. It's not in the ingredients, so is this normal? thanks. HunterFisher replied: "Yes. That must be some good expensive stuff. Pour in on a slice of cantaloupe....OMG!!!"
tkquestion replied: "That is what it is supposed to be!
When Balsamic vinegar ages in oak barrel, the natural enzyme action makes vinegar thicker and sweeter. I have a bottle of 20 year old vinegar. It is quite thick (consistency of pancake syrup) and lightly sweet. I have tasted 150 year old one not too long ago. This one was even thicker and sweeter.
What most grocery store sells as Balsamic vinegar is nothing more than flavored wine vinegar. What you and I are talking about is the real thing. A good (and real) balsamic vinegar is supposed to be not that acidic, somewhat to quite sweet, and not so tart. Some people put this stuff on strawberry and ice cream.... (I do not)
Yup... that's normal."
Kracker replied: "Sounds like you have the real deal, not grocery store junk. If so its a beautiful thing. Use sparingly to cook with, drizzle over fruit, ice cream or anything you like." how do you get balsamic vinegar out of cream coloured cotton knit top? Tiny spots of balsamic salad dressing that has flicked onto the piece of clothing. heartsonfire replied: "I used club soda when balsamic vinegar was spilled on me. Dip a cloth in the club soda. Blot, do not rub the stains. It should pull right out." What is the difference between balsamic vinegar and redwine vinegar? I'm making a pasta dish. I'm using artichokes, sundried tomatoes, garlic, onion, shrimp and capers. The recipe calls for redwine vinegar. Can I subsitute with balsamic? Eric S replied: "No. Balsamic vinegar has gone through a long aging process (or has been colored and flavored to fake it) and as a result it is much less acid than regular vinegar- it tastes almost sweet- it can even be used as a fruit dressing. Get some red wine vinegar or ,if you can't find that, use plain vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
The balsamic MIGHT be OK in your dish, but you should test it carefully- don't just try it on your family or guests."
alex w replied: "WHITE VINEGAR OR JUST LEMON JUICE IS A GOD SUB .
ENJOY" What does balsamic vinegar taste like that you can put it over fruit? when i think of vinegar, i think of a very strong acidic taste. i can't see how the two (balsamic and fruit) could go together. stebbs replied: "I'm not a fan. It tastes sour/bitter. Some people like it though. Guess it just depends on taste"
kitch replied: "It's thicker and it's sweet. Not as acidic as other vinegars."
Kimberly D replied: "i've often seen recipes that call for drizzling balsamic vinegar over fruit but i'm not crazy about the idea. i guess it's something you have to taste to really know what everyone's talking about."
dazpania replied: "I think its delicious, especially if you have a salad and add grapes, cranberries and mango, very tasty."
PhilbertFlange replied: "If you're trying that, you'll want to get a really really good balsamic vinegar. Something that's been aged a bit. Young/cheap balsamics are used more for salad dressings. The more expensive ones have sweeter, subtler flavours that pair well with fruits."
tshmalloy replied: "this is delicious--i do it all the time in the summer with strawberries and cherries. it sounds weird, but it is sooo good! like the person said before me, you need to get a good aged one--the older the better. the consistency is actually more like syrup, but you can turn the regular balsamic vinegar thicker by boiling it and reducing it down. also tastes good over a spinach salad with strawberries or dried cranberries and feta cheese."
Kracker replied: "High quality Balsamic tastes a bit like a hearty red wine but with a smokey follow. If you're using it for a fruit dish, dessert? Make sure you buy high quality aged balsamic. Its not inexpensive!" How do you remove the smell of balsamic vinegar from your brain? Yesterday I went into my kitchen and it smelled very strongly of balsamic vinegar. By now, the smell is all gone, but it's really a smell that I hate alot. All day I've been getting "flashbacks" of the smell, and having to run to the bathroom to vomit. How do I delete this smell from my memory? napqueen replied: "Take a few whiffs of a strong chemical, like ammonia. That should reboot your olfactory system."
I use Google for your answers. replied: "like salt and smell a lot of bleach."
explorer replied: "try a lobotomy"
londa627 replied: "Vinegar is one of those smells that hangs around...just try smelling something else....and just forget about that smell."
K r y s t y n E replied: "Maybe you are pregnant. Vinegar shouldn't make you vomit - however the smell of burning poo should."
Me replied: "go chew some mint gum it will work"
.:Tinamarie:. replied: "Take a sniff of coffee beans!! Seriously!! A lot of girls carry a pill bottle in their purse when going to buy perfume. After each sent they sniff the coffee beans. There is something in them that destroys the last smell."
Emotastic replied: "drink some strong black coffee" How do I clean balsamic vinegar stains from cotton shirt? Some balsamic vinegar splashed all over my white cotton shirt. I left it on for about 3 hours so I wouldn't make the stains worse before I could get to a washing machine. Before I threw it in the wash, I pre-treated the stains with Shout gel. After washed and dried, I still see faint stains on the shirt. Should I throw it in the wash again and use the pre-treater again as well as some bleach? Sami V replied: "Use a suitable bleach!"
piratebob replied: "Use bleach or just buy a new shirt. Why waste your time worrying about it."
sophieb replied: "I'd try it a second time with shout, wash in cold water. Do NOT dry it in a dryer or you will set the stain.
Generally white cottons do brighten up with some bleach in the water (or like using Tide with bleach is better) but only after the stain mark is out." How do you get a balsamic vinager stainoff a cotton shirt? I was preparing a salad dressing and got some balsamic vinegar on light blue cotton shirt. I used Shout but that didn't work. I have not dried the shirt yet so hopefully I can still get it out any ideas? Thanks. rumpunchman replied: "be very careful not to use something that
will take out the color.
how bout one of those stain pens !
made by tide and other company,s"
phyllis replied: "shout is the best !! if you have washed this and dried it i don't think anything will help, but if not, just use shout and wash - it takes everything out" |
